In fact, she lived to 92 and said it nearly every day. Granted there is a hint of pessimism in the phrasing. Reflecting on my own life, I've come up with an optimistic interpretation: life has the potential to be rich and satisfying if we use adversity to grow stronger. Even still, a positive reframe deserves a closer look...
When you experience adversity, it has the potential to make you stronger. However, it is not automatic nor is it guaranteed.
A positive mindset helps you see the opportunity. With a negative mindset, people often harden instead of strengthen.
Depending on the type of challenge you face, you may come out stronger physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, financially or some combination of those.

Since it's rarely automatic, you need to take action to capitalize on this growth opportunity. Afterall, you did put your energy, time and other valuable resources into navigating this challenge. Extracting value from adversity is a process that typically requires reflection, objectivity, analysis, intention, commitment, making meaning and drawing lessons.
With time and patience most of us are capable of doing this on our own, at least to a degree. However, having objective, insightful and supportive people in our lives often helps shorten the time and energy we spend making sense of, and creating something positive from, the challenges we overcome.
Needing and wanting help is perfectly normal and understandable. Asking for help is strongly encouraged! Plus it's worth doing the work. When we become resilient, we are building our capacity to handle more in life. We are better prepared to meet the next big challenge, and we even find it easier to navigate day to day situations, with less stress and less energy expended.
